What is a Laryngectomy?
A laryngectomy is the surgical removal of the larynx or ‘voice box’, which connects your nose and mouth to your lungs and protects them by keeping fluid and food in the oesophagus and out of your lungs.
A laryngectomy affects your speaking, swallowing, and breathing. A laryngectomy is a serious but necessary treatment for people who:
- have cancer of the larynx
- have sustained severe injury to the neck
- develop radiation necrosis (damage to the larynx stemming from radiation treatment)
A total laryngectomy is usually used to treat advanced stage-three or stage-four laryngeal cancer and also requires a permanent tracheostomy.
