The previous articles in this series have outline what dysphagia is, how it is diagnosed and treated and outlined how important it is to keep hydrated if you are living with dysphagia. In this article, we will highlight a number cups and mugs specifically designed for people with dysphagia to help them manage the condition and drink with more comfort and control.

Kapitex Dysphagia Cup

Kapitex Dysphagia Cup

The Kapitex Dysphagia Cup is oval-shaped to allow sufficient nose clearance to empty its contents, without having to tilt the head back while you are drinking. It has been designed to meet the needs of people who have difficulty in completing a successful swallow, which can include someone who has had a stroke, head injury or neurological disability.

Key Features

  • Suitable for warm and cold fluids and thickened fluids.
  • Weighted to help reduce spills for patients with tremor.
  • One piece construction with a wide handle to allow extended palm – so gripping not required.
  • The cup is supplied with a detachable base for extra stability.
  • Made of durable non-toxic polycarbonate material, cup base polyethene.
  • It is CE marked.

Kapi-Cups

KapicupsThese semi-flexible lightweight cups are carefully shaped to encourage safe drinking and swallowing. Kapi-Cups have a cut out on the non-drinking side so that they can be tilted without interference by the nose. This allows you to avoid tilting your head back, minimising the chance of aspiration.

Key Features

  • Made of polypropylene with smooth moulded edges, bite-safe and shatterproof.
  • Suitable for warm and cold fluids and thickened fluids.
  • Small size (30ml) ideal for use with children.
  • The medium and large sized cups are supplied with a double handle holder.
  • A choice of single or double handle holders are available.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • CE marked.

Drink-Rite – Safer Hydration Delivery

Drink RiteThe Drink-Rite system provides a controlled limited flow of fluid of 5cc or 10cc into the mouth without the drinker having to tilt their head. This is important particularly after a stroke, or for elderly users. Children with development also benefit from the special design features of Drink-Rite.

Key Features

  • Ideal for domestic as well as nursing home use.
  • Available in cup or beaker options, each with 5cc and 10cc inserts.
  • Bite-safe and shatterproof.
  • Suitable for users who cannot tolerate thickened fluids.
  • Suitable for stage 1 thickened fluids.
  • A safe option for users with dementia or learning difficulties to prevent ‘gulping’ (drinking too quickly).
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • CE marked.

NOVO Cup

NOVO CupLast but certainly not least is the NOVO cup from Kapitex. The NOVO Cup is ideal people whose head and neck movement is restricted and is an excellent choice for dependent patients. With the NOVO Cup you are in complete control of the flow rate of fluid by simply sucking on the spout when the cap plug is in place.

  • Suitable for warm and cold fluids and Stage 1 thickened fluid.
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe.
  • Spill proof clear plastic beaker – so contents are visible.
  • Contains up to 250ml liquid with measured markings.
